New Toyota Rush

New Toyota Rush

Looks like UMW Toyota has picked the right time yet again, to launch another magnificent model - the New Toyota Rush, to compliment their current Malaysian line-up, and since yesterday, bookings were already taking place throughout the country. Officially the 7-seater all New Toyota Rush will be launched into the Malaysian market this coming Friday, 1st of February, 2008 and can be viewed at all UMW Toyota showrooms.

The New Toyota Rush will carry the tag-line - Define Your Lifestyle, as it begins its domination into the entry level SUV market, given the fact on the run-out of Perodua Kembara in Q2 2007. This will be a first for UMW Toyota, as the New Toyota Rush will be a completely-built-up unit (CBU) model direct from Indonesia.

If you love the thrill of city life as much as the great outdoors, the Rush is an SUV tailored just for you. Sleek enough for the cityscape’s, accommodating enough for weekend fun.

The all New Toyota Rush, will come in three variants to maximise product marketability :

  1. 1.5G (Manual), is priced at RM85,888.00 (Individual Private) with Insurance & Road Tax
  2. 1.5G (Auto), is priced at RM88,888.00 (Individual Private) with Insurance & Road Tax
  3. 1.5S (Auto), is priced at RM94,888.00 (Individual Private) with Insurance & Road Tax

In looking at the New Toyota Rush, I find that the model has a sophisticated look, with short overhangs and long wheelbase to emphasise the large wheels at each corner, which gives a sense of stability. It will come as no surprise if you are at any time taken-up by its eye-catching wheel flares, sturdy looks and prominent front styling, that proves it to be tough. Having dynamic features such as - curvaceous bonnet, headlamps and rear combi lamps, make the New Toyota Rush all too captivating.

This is a summary of the features found on the 3 variants :

(Rush 1.5G M/T, A/T)

  • Exterior :
  1. Multi-reflector headlamps
  2. Bulb-type High Mount Stop Lamp (HMSL)

Toyota Rush Gate Type Shift Lever

Once seated inside the New Toyota Rush you will notice that the minimum overhangs and maximum wheelbase design has made it - comfortably spacious. One major advantage on the part of the New Toyota Rush compared to its closest competitor - Naza Citra, is in its interior height, which gives it an added convenience for passengers to access the 3rd row seats without having to contort their body, as this comparison shows :

  • Interior Height (mm) - Rush 1,240 @ Citra 1,180 (-60)

Another plus point for the New Toyota Rush of having its undoubtly long wheelbase - the ability to accommodate a minimum turning radius of 5.2m beating Citra’s 5.3m turning radius :

  • Wheelbase (mm) - Rush 2,685 @ Citra 2,560 (-125) @ Livina 2,600 (-85)

There’s no doubt that the New Toyota Rush will do well in the Malaysian SUV segment as it is equipped with modern features and a vigorous personality that’s ready to take on your preferred terrains.

And as with all other models under the UMW Toyota belt, the New Rush is no different as its built with an array of technologies engineered to give balance between power and control, enabling smoother acceleration. Let’s look at this comparison :

Max Output (PS/rpm) - Rush 109/6,000 @ Citra 2.0 138 (+29)/6,000 @ Livina 1.6 A/T 105 (-4)/5,200

Max Torque (Nm/rpm) - Rush 141/4,400 @ 175 (+34)/4,500 @ 150 (+9)/4,400

Kerb Weight (kg) - Rush 1,220 @ Citra 2.0 1,461 (+241) @ Livina 1.6 A/T 1,245 (+25)

Power To Weight Ratio (kg/kW) - Rush 15.0 @ Citra 14.2 (-0.8) @ Livina 1.6 A/T 15.9 (+0.9)

Looking at this, its safe to say that the New Toyota Rush has a better power-to-weight ratio against the Livina 1.6, and Citra’s power-to-weight ratio advantage over Rush is minimised by it’s 241kg weight difference.

And as always, the big question, every potential customer would want to know is its fuel consumption on these models, here’s the result :

Fuel Consumption (EEC) (L/100km) * Manufacturer’s Claim
Urban - Rush 10.2 @ Citra 11.1 @ Livina 11.1
Extra Urban - Rush 6.9 @ 7.1 @ Livina 7.1
Combined - Rush 7.9 @ Citra 8.1 @ Livina 8.1

If we analyze this further you would notice that the New Toyota Rush uses the VVT-i technology which is well excepted in the industry as an engine which provides excellent output and fuel economy, compared to Citra’s local spec engine which is not using Kia’s CVVT (Continuous Variable Valve Timing) technology.

Toyota Rush - Rear

The all New Toyota Rush uses a timing chain, which is considered to be a modern standard requirement for variable valve timing, where-else Naza Citra still uses a timing belt, which requires interval replacement, hence adding to your maintenance costs.

Another factor for a better performing Toyota Rush is considered to be in its drivetrain layout which is a rear-wheel-drive, hence :

  • Front-to rear weight distribution is more balanced, for better traction, better braking and more neutral handling.
  • As the rearward load increases e.g 7-passengers, or driving up a gradient, traction does not decrease.

If style is what you’re looking for, from the little touches on the meter combination to the versatile and practical seats, the all New Toyota Rush is ready to accommodate all your needs, be it for work or play.

I do not agree with this statement “Front-to rear weight distribution is more balanced, for better traction, better braking and more neutral handling.” because it is rear-wheel drive and only with front SOLID disc brake. It does not sound safety because if you drive fast and press sudden brake, the rear wheel will still going but front tyres are locked (1.5G).

and for this 80K model, it is the only car use front Solid disc brake for this generation.

Expected more from Toyota especially at the highest RM95k price range - should come with tinting, leather seats and at least a 1.6 engine. Toyota is taking advantage of its brand. Since the Malaysian price/tax structure for SUV cars is such that there is a gap between a Kembara and the next level >RM100k SUV, Toyota Rush comes in filling this gap albeit giving consumers less for its price tag.

Wow, looks like a majority of you out there figure that this is an overpriced vehicle … maybe you’re right, but nevertheless, me being a neutral person, I’m sure that most, if not all motor manufacturing companies normally do everything possible to ensure that their prices remain competitive and UMW Toyota could be no different in this.

There could be other reasons not known to the common people like you and me, which is beyond their control thus not permitting them in releasing the Rush with a cheaper price tag.

As for the author “auto”, I can see your point, but the interpretation of a sentence can be justified by a mere test drive.

And Rahman, if you don’t mind getting a 2007 manufactured vehicle then you probably should get your vehicle almost immediately, but if it’s a 2008 manufacture you’re opting for, UMW Toyota sources say you would probably have to wait till end of March to take delivery.

I’d visit to showroom more than 3 times….found the same problem to every unit of RUSH….really bad workmanship & Quality of INDON MADE’s car!

    1.Painting not consistent…
2.Internal Plastic feel too strong, worse than vios!
3.Door frame not install properly, very loose.

I felt that the out look is quite nice and attractive but inside is not i expected. I had saw the Japan spec interior, its much more difference for M’sia spec. I think auto is right, the rear wheel should have disc brake. It’s UMW plan to launch 4WD Rush in M’sia?

Eric @ Apparently many of the showrooms I contacted faced similar problems, not sure why though, but nevertheless it should be available somewhere next week in some outlets as I’ve been told. Let me know if you still need help on this :)

Chris @ If you ask my honest opinion, I would go for a car fitted with a VVTi engine to save me some money :) On paper it looks like a pretty good car for those concerned about fuel economy and all, but then again, I still believe that at times, driving style, conditions and other related factors can also play a major part on determining the overall outcome of performance capabilities of a vehicle.

Ryan @ If its a 4WD model you’re looking for, then I would suggest you hang-on till this May and have a look at Perodua’s 5-seater version to this. But I have a strange feeling that the price from them on this model is gonna be on the high side.

The salesman contacted me for test driving. And when I was there, he told me that the car can only be tested within the compound of the service center. Can’t really judge the performance as test driving in such a small area the car can’t even have a chance to switch to 3rd gear!!

    My opinion of the car

    i) look the fittings are ,no posssible of vibration after few years likely.not a problem to japanese cars these days.

ii) test drive in the small areaat Toyota Shah alam sale office.felt matching power to the weight.(i.e not underpower) pick up though not been tested as the track is too shot for that purpose.

iii)suv of that size normally is around 100 k i think but of course with bigger engine capacity. So with price tag 80k -90k over,i think would be alright.offer made by Tucson Hyundai last time around the price offered 85 k for 2.0 L).get acessories or something else like tinted mirrors from the salesman/girl.

iv)being toyota badged car, the price for second hand in future will be good compare to korean cars ,citra, tucson etc

iv) the coming new perodua 4×4 will be of smaller size…terios daihatsu.this where Rush could beat the perodua. If they make it larger, then Rush will suffer as it has no competive edge interm of power, origin first CBU batch will be sent from japan, more of quality.

Hi all, I’ve booked one, 1.5S Black Mica. Salesman said - delivered around 2 to 2.5 months. Exterior +- = fortuner (smaller version). Crazy on fortuner actually, but not afford to buy…hukhuk…so, take the smaller version la…hehe…

    Congratulations Ida…..

Delivery takes 2 to 2.5 months? Can say that reflects the total orders for Toyota Rush are keep on increasing each days, huh?

From side view looks like CRV + Fortuner, back view like RAV4, so 3 kinda of looks for this unit.

hi, i m still hoping know about the fuel consumption. Any Rush owner can help on this?

  28. 28 On March 27th, 2008, Ekai said:

The Toyota Sales Advisor told me that the FC for Toyota Vios is 13 cents per KM. For Toyota Rush is 17 cents per KM. That was what he said la.

Then, below is a statement that I “copy and paste” from one website. A guy called Terran there uttered this:

“I have received my Rush for onw week already and the following is my feedback on the fuel consumption and power.

Firstly, the fuel consumption. Our initial fear that this is a much underpower car and the fuel consumption would be high is all wrong. The full tank of the Rush is around RM80 and I have managed to chalked up 490km from the full tank. Bear in mind, this is a one week old car. Fuel consumption is expected to improve after first service.

As for power, the Rush is just a vehicle that will carry your family from point A to point B. There is nothing to shout about. But it has power to climb albeit at slower pace.

Generally my family is happy with the car. Built quality is OK despite the let down of interior finishing.

Speaker need to change, sound is lousy but head unit is ok. Aircon is OK but at 3rd speed, blower sound is very noticeable.

Other than that, everything is a OK. Toyota lah my friend.”

So, 490KM = RM80.00 means, its true the FC is between 16 to 17 cents per KM. What do you all think?

Well, my uncle bought Rush also, his is S type, and he convert to leather seat somemore.

Saya pun nak satu, Pak Cik!!! kekekekek

Just use Rush 1.5 S for 7 days now. My wife’s Rush actually, but im the test driver or QC inspector..haha. So i test kaw kaw sket tak bagi chance. (3 years warranty maa..)

I love it, my wife love it, my family love it…this is why -

    Strong Points

    1. VVTI - pick up ok, top speed ok. No underpower. A lil bit more than what u expect of 1.5cc engine. Quiet engine too.
    2. Compact car easy to handle ie when parking (even my wife can drive it!)
    3. Seven seater - comfortable for 2 normal size adult to seat at the last row
    4. Baby Fortuner - cant afford Toyota Fortuner, so start with a Rush first..hehe
    5. Its a Toyota - based on the market now, Toyota used value is consider good
    6. Road tax murah - RM90.00. One of the cheapest or the cheapest 7 seater SUV around.

    Weak points

    1. Fuel consuption….this is what happened to me. The first time i fill in the petrol was RM50. I only got around 240 km! Scary. So i fill up another RM50 after that, i got 267km, another RM50 now the metre show 647km with around RM30 left on the tank. (i assume one bar is RM10 on the petrol indicator). So we will see what happen after the first service ok?
    2. Bright or light colour interior - very very easy to get dirty. Hard to maintain. Make me pening kelapa when my niece step in the car…haha
    3. No tint window.
